Hopefully, some of our sailors can get together for some informal races between now and the beginning of the December Series or even organize a cruise.
In a little over a week I should have the SKSC Nov. Newsletter mailed.
Charlie Kilbourne, Commodore
Based on this, Commodore Kilbourne has decided to cancel today's race.
He encourages those who are available to arrange informal races to enjoy the warm weather while it lasts.
Great Expectations is available at the drop of a hat to race any day next week inspite of my arthritic knee that slows me some in the come abouts!
I think it would be a good tradition to start that the latest member to join
should make the arrangements.
I am thinking of Peter Buros as being a likely
candidate!

Coda, with only her 2nd appearance, placed first. This was a HC race, giving Great Expectations her official HC of 21.

On Monday - Nov 2, Great Expectations was to have finished two trial races so that
her finishes can be recorded. She could not start because her drain
plug fell out and her hull filled up with water with no way to remove it.
She hastily sailed back to Vamo Park to avoid needing a rescue effort.
On Tuesday - Nov 3, she finished 4th but her position did not count
and the wind was not enough to count it as a Handicap Trial Race.
On Monday - Nov 2, Coda broke a shroud and had to retire.
On Tuesday - Nov 3, Friend Ship dropped out before reaching the South mark
due to a broken mainsheet.
Her motor is acting up so she may not be out for Nov 4.
On Wednesday - Nov 4, winds were very fluky with brisk breezes followed by lulls. I was blasting along within 40 yards of Second Wind who rounded ahead of me at the East Mark when he was in dead air. But, then the wind died for me and I had to watch him get going again to open up probably 3 or 4 minutes on me. Then, before the South mark, it looked like I might catch him but that was not to be.

Coda sailed her first completed race of the season. I just received a call from Frank saying his motor is repaired, so Ace High should be with us today.

NNE 15 is encouraging for those of us who have not done well
thus far this season. It is apparent that the Great E really needs 13 mph
to get on a plane. Wednesday did not have a sustained wind over 12 as far as I could tell. Perhaps she will perform tomorrow! The cooler temperature will also be welcome. Pulling on lines in the hot weather takes a lot out of us seniors. I have been feeling muscles across the chest that I have not noticed in a long while.
Maybe I should put another part in the mainsheet system if it is going to blow hard for today.
NOAA Weather Report.
Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 83. North northeast wind between 16 and 18 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
Friday: Sunny, with a high near 83. Northeast wind between 14 and 16 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.

Coda appeared yesterday to sail with us for the first time this season. Unfortunately, she had to drop out when a shroud parted. Great E, although sailing up to the race course, could not enter the race. She experienced difficulties as well when a cockpit bailing plug failed.
Ace High's motor repair is still facing a delay since an ordered part did not arrive, but she should be with us tomorrow. Again, thanks to Bob Miller for setting out the east and south marker.

Correct Time
On Friday (10-30). we finally got our handicap day when a 9 mph sea breeze made its appearance. Using our 8-day HC chart, we were able to tack on another day of course times. Since it was a very slow HC day, HCs were abnormally low. Even with an 8-day HC compilation for most boats, HC times were only slightly affected. The chart at left is the new HC chart for this coming week. No boat's HC time has changed by more than a minute, and some times remain the same.
Great E. has one more time trial with a HC wind day before she becomes official and is able to acquire points. Since she has a scant HC record, her time can be changed on a daily basis this week once she receives an official HC.
Other boats can have their HCs changed based on factors such as their long absence or their abnormal speed performance (new sails, paint etc.). Fleet Capt. Dave Farr, Com. Charlie Kilbourne and veteran sailor Dick Fox form a race committee deciding these issues. Keeping the races as fair as possible is our objective.
Sailors, please respond to this email with at least an OK, so we're sure everyone is aware of it.

Check the current standing at SKSC Home Page.
The sea breeze usually fills in about 1:20. This coincides with the
SKSC regular start time that has served us well over the years.
It has been hard to set a good handicap for Great Expectations.
By agreement with Commodore Charley Kilbourne last night, if the wind is up to 12 or more, I was to start with a 20 minute handicap. That is the highest handicap that Goomar had.
In checking for Venice weather at www.weather.com, I found that the wind was already up to 11 at Noon. I expected it to increase as the land heats up but that
was not the case today.
Even though the wind never got over 9 with many soft spots, I managed to come in 4th behind Second Wind by only about 30 seconds.
One strong puff might have put me a head at the finish but it was not to be.
Instead, the wind seemed to die off near the finish. Such is luck. Because I don't have an official starting time, I show up as finishing last on the chart because I will not
be scored until my handicap is established.
As Charlie said, we have some boats that don't do well in the light stuff.
That showed today for Nina who could not get the breeze that those with
taller masts experienced.
I think that a 20 minute handicap will be fairer to others.
Commodore Kilbourne has accepted my suggestion that my handicap be increased to
20 if the wind prediction for tomorrow's race is for 12 or more. Otherwise,
I will continue to have the same 17 minute handicap. As of 10 pm Thursday night,
www.weather.com is predicting only 8 mph.
Dave Farr and Charley noticed that in the 7 mph zephyrs, Second Wind and Great E
have about the same time around the course - 54 minutes average. The Handcapping
rule is that the trials must be done between 8 and 14 mph winds.
As we know, weather has been a problem with its high temps. and low wind velocities. We have been unable to adjust handicaps since HC winds should average between 8 and 14 mph. The last 2 days have been especially detrimental to the slower boats and to the new boat, Great Expectations which is in need of an official HC to be able to race for points.
Don't forget to reset clocks over the weekend for next week's races.

SRQ Weather is found by seachng Google with that argument:
Bill Hoffman continued to sail Friend Ship very well. He actually won the race because Great E's finish did not count.

The Great E suffered from not having everything checked out before the race.
The outhaul for the sail let go causing the clew to slide forward so that the
sail shape was very poor. It took a few prescious minutes to work that problem.
Then, in a jibe, the mainsheet caught on my life jacket. While disentangling
myself, I let go of the tiller and the boat jibed back and broched causing a full
360 degree turn after rounding the first mark.
It was noticed that in the very light air, the Force 5 mast is not high enough
to catch the air as well as the others. But, when the breeze fills in, she
accelerates much quicker because she is only 140 lbs ringing wet.
Great E came in behind Friend Ship and ahead of Dad's Therapy. She is shown as last because this was the first of two trial races she must
sail before her position is recorded. That is necessary to establish a
more accurate handicap. Today she was given a 17 minute handicap and finished
in 55 minutes at 2:42 which is not bad considering how light the breeze was at
times.
Fleet Captain Dave Farr did a great job of keeping Second Wind moving in the very
light stuff and seemed to be able to point much higher than all others. He won by
a big margin.
I look forward to tomorrow's racing when there should be a little stronger winds.
Fleet Captain Dave Farr and I checked websites, TV and SRQ airport for weather info. With winds from 15 to 25 mph and a 50 % chance of thunderstorms for this afternoon, we think it's best to call off the race for today.
It looks like we have a good chance to be out there tomorrow. All active members have been phone-called as well as sent this email regarding today.
Please check your phone answering machine and email messages for a possible cancellation for any of the Series race days. We try to make cancellation announcements as early as we can, so you can plan your day.

Anna Lenck reported on the Sarasota Bay Front Mooring Field. The screw type moorings that contractor Milmac have been installed in the first section have failed to hold.
It is uncertain what the City Government is going to do now other than to declare
the contract with the Milmac voided for non-performance.
Guest Dan Wilder is a very experienced skipper who owns a Pearson Electra that he races on Long Island Sound. He is available for crewing over the next several months. He will race the first week with Bob Miller until Bob's normal crew returns. Dan can be reached on his cell phone at 203 856-6034.
Racing will start on Tuesday October 27 for 4 days and then the following
week from Monday to Thursday and more days if make up races are needed.
Milton Thrasher and his son Jim are shown sailing his Star Class at Cedar Point Yacht Club this summer.
